What if . . . 9/9/15

There has been a song that has captured my attention as I’ve listened to it on the radio a number of times over the last several months.  It is called “Blessings” and it is sung by Laura Story.  I’ve included a link to youtube at the bottom of this email that has the song with the lyrics and would encourage you to click on the link and listen to it.

The reason the song has captured my attention so is that it asks the question, “what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise?”

I have to admit to you that it has bothered me for quite some time that we measure whether or not God has heard our prayers by “if we get the answers that we hoped for.”  We don’t feel like God has heard us or has answered our prayers if the outcome is less than or different than we had hoped or prayed for.  I’m going to write out the words to this song and I want to invite you this morning to look over them, then I invite you to click on the link and listen to the song and then remind yourself that this world is not our home.  By the way, the emphasis in bold below is mine.

We pray for blessings, we pray for peace; comfort for family, protection while we sleep.  We pray for healing, for prosperity; we pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering.  All the while, You hear each spoken need, yet love is way too much to give us lesser things . . .

Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops, what if Your healing comes through tears, what if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near?  What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise?

We pray for wisdom, Your voice to hear; and we cry in anger when we cannot feel You near – we doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love, as if every promise from Your Word is not enough . . . All the while you hear each desperate plea and long that we’d have faith to believe . . .

Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops, what if Your healing comes through tears, what if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near?  What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise?

When friends betray us, when darkness seems to win; we know the pain reminds this heart that this is not, this is not our home . . . it’s not our home.

Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops, what if Your healing comes through tears, what if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near?  What if my greatest disappointments or the aching of this life is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy?  And what if trials of this life . . . the rain, the storms, the hardest nights, are Your mercies in disguise?

I end with this prayer – “Lord, please help me to listen to you in every circumstance, in every problem, in every heartache and in every trouble, because WHAT IF those trials are Your mercies in disguise and I miss it because all I can focus on is me?”

I love you,

Rick

Upcoming Activities

Today, Wednesday September 9 – We have our regular activities tonight beginning with dinner at 5:00.  At 6:00 we invite anyone who is hungry to pray, to learn more about prayer, to seek God’s heart to join us in the sanctuary as we journey into the school of prayer.

Saturday September 12 – Run for the B.E.A.C.H. – This 18th Annual 5K Run/Walk raises awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Education, Awareness, Cure & Hope (B.E.A.C.H.).  All proceeds go to defray mammogram costs and expenses for people in Lincoln County.  Cheyenne Heltzel is putting together a team of folks who would like to participate.  The team with the biggest number of members will receive a Dessert Party sponsored by The Buttery.  If you would like to be part of this team the cost is a simple entry fee of $20.  ALL monies go to help defray mammogram costs so the cause is worthy.  And you don’t have to walk or run in the 5K, just pay your entry fee and if your team wins the contest you’ll be invited to a free dessert party.  You CAN’T beat a deal like that and everyone who pays the entry fee gets a t-shirt as well!  You can contact Cheyenne at 575 315-4147 or by email at cheyheltcel@aol.com.

Sunday September 13 – This Sunday morning we are beginning a journey through the eyes of an eyewitness – a man who was there when Jesus walked on the earth and saw so many things up close and personal.  We are going to begin a journey through the books of 1st, 2nd and 3rd John.  He writes to us about relationships – a vertical relationship and horizontal relationships.  Join us in either of the morning services at 8:45 and 10:30.  We also have our Hispanic service at 4:00.
