Time to Thicken the Church

This past week we have celebrated the birth of our nation once again.  241 years ago the United States of American was founded and began with values and principles that helped to make us a great nation.  The core of those principles was the fact that we based our laws, values and principles on the Word of God and Christian principles.  I encourage you to think about this as you read what I have to share with you today.  I want to share an article I got this week from Breakpoint, a daily radio program that is also sent out as an email through the Colson Center.  I hope you’ll take the time to read it and really think about what it means to “Thicken Up the Church.”  What follows is the article and then I’ll comment at the end

The Holy Spirit and Power

I am struck once again by the power of God.  I am amazed at the fact that God chooses to work in my life – me – someone who is so full of “so little.”  I am amazed that God uses me.  I am overwhelmed when He works in me, with me, and maybe more than anything else through me.  God showed me again yesterday how much He loves me and that the dreams that He has put into my life are SO VERY DEPENDENT UPON HIM AND NOT ME!  I get into trouble when I forget that and when I get “stuck” in my abilities; my resources; my plans.  God says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'”  Jeremiah 29:11.  Now when it is “me” interpreting that I look at and LOVE the word “prosper” and I forget that God’s idea of “prosper” is to bless me with His presence and use His power to work through me, rather than to make my life a bed of roses; He isn’t here to make my day better or to take away all of my problems; He is here to use me to touch others and make an eternal difference through my obedience and willingness in the lives of others.  His plans are the best and when I listen to Him and trust Him regardless of what I might feel, then watch out, God is about to do something incredible.  Let me share a simple example that happened this morning.

I don’t have much to say this morning, but I am saddened by what has happened over the last few hours that affect our nation and affects our community here in Lincoln County.  An upstanding member of our community and his son were both killed in a private airplane crash last night here at Sierra Blanca airport.  This following the death of another member of our community, a young man in his 30’s who died of an apparent heart attack last week.  Then news out of Washington D.C. this morning that a lone gunman shot at and hit at least 3 people who were out on a baseball field practicing for a friendly game of ball between Republicans and Democrats.  It would be foolish to hypothesize about the reasons for the shooting because we know almost nothing, only the name of the shooter, and yet already on Facebook I’ve seen someone post, blaming one organization, not knowing anything about this.  And all the while the levels of anger, hatred, vile words being thrown around and used to denigrate people who don’t think, act or speak like we think, feeling that we somehow have the right to treat fellow human beings with such disrespect.  I an saddened by what we have come to accept and especially by those who call themselves followers of Christ!
